The Ministry of Education has been thrown into confusion today after disturbing details arose indicating that it is impossible to have grade six pupils who are expected to undertake their KPSEA 2022 national tests starting November 28, 2022, join junior secondary schools as day scholars come February 2023, the official reporting dates.

All grade six learners in Kenya who are the pioneers of the new competency-based curriculum, CBC are finalizing their primary school education. The 2022 KPSEA national examinations will be conducted within three days between November 28 and 30 this year. The examinations will run concurrently with the KCPE 2022 national examinations.
The rehearsal day has been set for November 25, 2022.

How Junior Secondary School will be Structured under CBC

Education CS Professor George Magoha had earlier indicated that the current KPSEA 2022 candidates will join junior secondary schools as day scholars.
Although most of the parents and other key stakeholders raised eyebrows wondering and questioning the possibility of having all students join day schools, they never raised any issues then.
Under the new CBC curriculum, the junior secondary school will comprise Grades 7, 8, and 9. Upon completion of junior secondary studies, students are expected to join the senior secondary school for grades 10, 11, and 12.
Given that the KPSEA 2022 candidates have got approximately four months to sit for their Kenya Primary School Education Assessment Tests, the education ministry is rushing against time to complete the construction of 10, 000 classrooms.
Reality has begun to dawn on the officials that it is impossible for all grade 6 learners to operate from home once they join the junior secondary school in grade 7.

Selection Criteria for Placement of Grade 6 KPSEA 2022 Candidates into Secondary Schools

According to the education ministry, all grade six learners will be placed in secondary schools close to their homes to make it easier for them to operate as day scholars.
The state department in charge of the implementation of the new CBC curriculum made it clear that placement of KPSEA 2022 candidates will be pegged on proximity between the candidate’s former primary school and the secondary school that he or she will be posted to for junior secondary school studies.
“Posting of learners to junior high will be informed by the capability of the parents to transport a child to the school they have chosen,” notes Ms. Ruth Mugambi, the technical advisor to the Principal Secretary in charge of CBC.

This is after details emerged showing that it is impossible for some students to access day schools offering junior secondary within their locality especially those in arid and semi-arid areas since they will be forced to trek for miles before accessing the nearest day school.
